The World Turns a mite strangely

A little over two weeks ago the US had elections for President as well as some Senators and representatives. I’m quite sure most of you remember it since TV’s and newspapers the world over covered it along with the usual conspiracy theorists from Facebook. Under normal circumstances the election would have been done and dusted by now. But that doesn’t allow for the capriciousness of the current President Donald J Trump .

Once the count had been done which took a few days because of votes by mail which are counted last the results appeared Joe Biden. Democrat 290 seats and over 79m votes Donald Trump Republican 232 seats and over 73m votes. This appears to be a decisive victory for Joe Biden. Under normal circumstances, and I repeat this because it’s anything but normal, the President would concede (as gracefully as possible), the President elect, his Vice President Kamala Harris who is blessed by being the only female in the role and the only woman of colour. (By all accounts she is an outstanding person.) and their team would be given access to certain things like the Presidents daily report on intelligence and security. There would be aa certain amount of money to come from the President’s Fund to enable the President Elect to start preparing for the transfer of power on January 20th.

So far none of this has happened. President Trump averred election fraud and demanded recounts. He’s certainly entitled to those but then came his strange demand that certain parts of the count be disregarded like anything hat came in after the date of the election. The rule is that as long as votes are date stamped as received in time, bearing in mind that each State has it’s own rules about that, the President knew that those late arriving votes would probably favour his opponent who because of Covid preferred to postal vote. All the States said no because the count had been done correctly and as per the rules of the States. If proof could be shown then action could be taken. It as said that even if fraudulent claims were added (less than 100) it would not be enough to make a difference to the results. The counts went on as did the complaints. About 250 lawsuits were sent based on wholesale fraud and President Trump had one Governor fall into line. But this being a Republican State and the counters objected to the implication that they were not doing their jobs complained to the Governor who rapidly changed his mind.

Two weeks down the line and President Trump has declined to follow protocol. His voters who have been responding to a plea for more money probably don’t know that his plea for help with a 2024 bid is actually supplying the money to pay off his election debts and these lawsuits. President Elect Biden is being denied the rights of an incoming President that even Trump received with grace from President Obama. The situation is untenable. Currently the President’s own Lawyer Rudy Giuliani is appearing in court to try and have the results voided or he’ll revert to a fall back position. The Presidents team of appointees are trying to hamper President Elect Biden by creating problems with various Countries before he even sets foot through the door of The White House. Iran may be one of hose casualties. Since President Trump withdrew from the agreement over Iran’s nuclear capabilities Iran has produced more than enough material to make bombs but it has chosen not to. If America stirs Iran there’s no saying that choice won’t change. It will be an awful job for Joe Biden to try and reform the Iran agreement with the other Countries that formed it.

I can only say that either this job is such a moneymaker that President Trump doesn’t want to leave it or he’s trying to avoid being arrested when he leaves office or having to avoid his creditors when about 100m is due. He’s such a bad businessman when his empire runs at a loss that maybe he can’t pay. I personally don’t mind a bit of payback to this most offensive man.

David, for all his bluster, Trump has the most fragile of egos. He cannot stand losing, which is why his history includes deceit, cheating and even corruption. His attorney and fixer, Michael Cohen testified under oath, that “Donald Trump is a racist, he is a con-artist and he is a cheat.” His comments were dismissed by sycophants as he was going to jail for lying. But, what he lied about before was to protect Trump. So, telling the truth gets you ignored (or in many cases fired and Chris Krebs was the latest truthteller to find out).

I have long viewed Trump with an image of a toddler who won’t let anyone else play with his sand toys in the playground sand box. Then he runs home to his mother crying, saying no one will play with me. Yet, the more recent visual I have settled on is Trump is Lewis Carroll’s Queen of Hearts. “Off with his head,” you can hear him think as he fires yet one more person or denigrates a reporter or critic.

At the end of this, if this deceitful and corrupt acting president is able to stay in power, the US will become a mere shell of itself. It will let a egomaniacal ruler “burn everything down to avoid losing” as his niece Mary recently said of her Uncle.

To me, this is all about his inability to stand losing. That is not a strength. That is a weakness. Why 72 million Americans thought this person deserved four more years is truly beyond me. Keith

I’d say that’s a pretty fair assessment Keith and I couldn’t agree with you more. I doubt he’ll get to stay on but I’m sincerely worries as to the damage he can do between now and the wonderful day he goes (evicted I hope ). He’s an evil man.

David, some damage has been done. He has sown seeds of doubt. So, he will complain for four years how he was cheated. This will be his rallying cry for his base. He lost because he got fewer votes in the states where he needed more. It is that simple. A real adult would accept that and concede. He will do neither. Keith

I still believe, though I’m not sure why, that the law will have the final say and that Trump will leave the White House on January 20th, one way or the other. However, as you say, the damage he could do between now and then is unimaginable. The fact that he has no conscience, that he only cares for his own fortunes and not the well being of the nation and its people, makes the situation even more dangerous, for once he realizes that he is going down, he would not hesitate to take the rest of the country … nay, the world … down with him.

I often find that friends ‘across the pond’ see our situation so much more clearly than many in this country see it. Perhaps it’s that old adage “… can’t see the forest for the trees”. Right now, we are in the most politically stressful time in most of our lives, and our friend David astutely sums it all up in a view from ‘cross the pond. Thank you, David!

The theatre performances running in the US can certainly evoke a “wealthy” array of emotions and reactions. I guess that’s what theatre is supposed to do. While Trump is pursuing his rights under the Constitution and law – and it’s never simple pursuing claims of fraud in such enormous matters as elections are – and that may seem distasteful to some he is doing nothing more than following due process in such situations and media especially tend to ignore that part. If they did not ignore it then we’d be looking at different headlines…I do so watch closely and take note of your comments as to possible real reasons for Trump’s actions… as most. I’m waiting to see how all this will play oit in the end. Hugs!

I’m perfectly happy that Trump should, if he is unhappy with he outcome of the election, follow due process of law But he is not doing so. He has started more than 30 and has lost/ been dismissed 31-2 so far. The two are very minor things. lawsuits for Fraudulent voting. He has not provided the courts with one iota of proof in these cases ( as though he’s not really interested……….yet). Worse still, his lawyers have gone into court and denied making Fraud accusations since of course they could be in a deal of trouble going forward and found to be aware that there is in fact no fraud case to answer.
I’m struggling a bit to decide whose game play this really is and whether it’s aimed at the current Supreme Court or maybe at the Electoral College in December
As long as he’s gone soon and the games stop I should be happy.
