What is Happening?

Many people like me were stunned to wake up this morning to hear of the newest, worst killings yet, over in Las Vegas. There have been rumours all day about the who and the why, no doubt many of them started to stir up and take advantage of any hate generated. It’s always handy to have a minority to blame. This time it turns out that the minority is a 64 year old white man with no criminal record and whose family say had no strong religious feelings. They are in fact stunned. The fact that Daesh claimed responsibility for the act does not make it true. Had he not killed himself he might have been  able to answer questions as to his reasoning and also how he managed to smuggle all his arms into the hotel. Maybe the truth will emerge slowly. Since his family say he was a country music fan, it can’t have been the concert that upset him.

I can’t help it, whenever I hear of something like this I immediately think and ask about gun control like the responsible bodies are actually going to see sense. One lady told me I shouldn’t ask this as whatever happens the criminals will still have access to guns. That may be so, but the access could be made a lot more difficult for them, especially by those people who buy guns regularly just to sell on to criminals. But, in part answer to the lady in question I’d say that a lot of these massacres are not committed by criminals, they’re committed by people with no criminal records but who had access to the arsenal found in that hotel room today. So maybe you just need to have gun control for the law-abiding. At times like this the NRA say don’t make decisions like that when the event has just happened. Don’t penalise gun owners for the actions of a few. Just how many more losses of life like this do you let go by before talking of gun control again. It’s not as if guns are a necessity and I’m sure many battered wives would be alive today if their partner hadn’t had a gun in his hand when he was feeling pissed with her. These people are in no shape or form the local militia envisioned by your Second Amendment yet they can get guns quite legally.

Please wait until you hear the reasons for this atrocity before you start throwing out blame, don’t listen to Daesh or others claiming it. Please think about how many more events like this America can bear, you may lose someone in the next one. 58 dead and 500+ injuries this time. Give some thought as to how many guns a person should be allowed and how easy it should be for them to get anything. Think about the number of youngsters who commit suicide or who are harmed by the guns in their houses. Or the number of women killed because their boyfriend doesn’t like the way his steak was fried.Think hard about some gun control.

End these atrocities and bring a little more peace to the world.

Hugs. David 02.10.017

Thank you for this post. As I mentioned yesterday, the conspiracy theorists are already busy at work and, though there was NO connection between the gunman and Daesh, some are blaming Muslims anyway. I fear a new wave of hate crimes against Muslims, and as you know, some of my best friends are Muslim refugees, so yes, it is personal. There are, in the U.S., 1.5 guns for every man, woman and child in the nation. We have the highest number of gun-related deaths of any western nation. And many of our members of Congress are bought, sold and paid for by the NRA. It is time to put a stop to it. If this tragedy doesn’t convince people, then nothing will. Thanks again, David, for your astute observations and your compassion.

There will always be some happy to blame their pet peeve of the minute especially before the facts are in.The thing is, if Daesh want the blame then go after Daesh but not after every Moslem because they’re the same colour. What Timothy McVey did was evil but that doesn’t mean all white people should be targeted and no-one would think of doing that. Because the Kremlin still have the KGB under Putin doesn’t make all Russians bad or guilty of fixing elections.
While feelings are running high this time it’s perfect for talking about gun control. Don’t let the NRA control the debate or the Senators, they represent you while the NNRA represent the arms manufacturers.

Agreed, but unfortunately, much of Congress is in the pockets of the NRA. They take ‘donations’ from the NRA in exchange for voting against bills that would put any form of regulations on gun sales & ownership. This is only one example of the need for campaign reform … members of Congress, in my opinion, should not be allowed to take more than token donations from lobbyist groups. As long as they are getting money, they cannot be counted on to remember that they represent we, the people. Sigh.

  3. Little to add, except possibly draw attention to the ‘right to bear arms’ which is justified in the Constitution on grounds of self-defence. Presumably, everyone in that crowd of tragic victims might have had a gun, but to no effect. Realistically, the instinct is to cut and run. Nobody apart from the police returned fire. This is the case in most of these mass killings and, it seems to me, completely invalidates the argument. Hugs, man!

  4. I am with you one hundred percent! Somehow a very unstable, narcissistic, vengeful man, Trump, was elected to be President, and most Americans are nervous wrecks, terrified that he is not only ruining America, but he is an extreme danger to the rest of the world. We have cowards in congress, but we have something called the 25th amendment that could be used to force him to resign or impeach him and the cowards rather wait until he releases a nuclear bomb somewhere in the world.

If he does do something utterly insane like starts a war with North Korea and it’s resident madman, congress better understand that people will start laying the blame on their inaction, and every life lost on both sides will be laid at their door. The world doesn’t need another war.

  5. David, I am now reading your book, My Barsetshire Diary, and it is delightful, interesting, and so funny! I have laughed so much and I love the bird, so adorable! What a reprieve from all the terrible news here in America. When I finish reading, i will do a lovely review. And, by the way, reading your delightful novel, remembers me of my love for the British Isles. I lived there for two wonderful years. K D 🙂
